sainte chapelle

sainte chapelle 1

Sainte Chapelle (the “Holy Chapel”) was built in the 13th century to house Louis IX’s relics, including the Crown of Thorns and a fragment of the True Cross. Sainte Chapelle was built in six years, which just blows my mind. I mean, there are photo albums and scrapbook projects I’ve had around for much, much longer than that.

During the French Revolution, the relics were kept in the National Library, and in 1806, were given to the archbishop of Paris to be placed in the Cathedral treasury. The Crown of Thorns is now housed at Notre Dame, and is put on display the first Friday of each month and every Friday during Lent.

Like, Judith doesn’t even care about the idea of a 5 day work week. She’s only about that billowed drapery.

Sometimes art is a wrapping paper that adds just the right touch of superhero, donuts, and prismatic perfection (click on each image for the link).

Caravaggio painted “Judith Beheading Holofernes” in 1598. The woman posing for Judith was a famous courtesan, who posed for multiple Caravaggio paintings.

That furrowed brow? Those earrings?! The girl isn’t even sweating this decapitation! Go girl!

Apollo just told Daphne it’s a school night. Ugh, Apollo! You RUIN EVERYTHING.

Curious about the story of how these two got together? Well, she started off being a housekeeper for Apollo’s brother. After a few seasons of will-they-or-won’t-they, they finally gave it go. I think they even got married by the end of the series!

Oh, shoot. I’m thinking of Frasier and Daphne. My mistake.

Vincent van Gogh painted this from memory of a bullfight. Within weeks of painting this, van Gogh had cut part of his ear. I feel similarly about large crowds.

Looks like Lovejoy just told Jack Dawson Leonardo diCaprio is 40 today.

marshmallow world

Sometimes art is Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin singing “Marshmallow World,” the song that’s featured in Target’s latest holiday ad. Be still my beating heart, I love this song. When my mom texted me the news this morning, I just sent her a bunch of Santa emojis and wrote, “Greatest news of my life.”

Though this kinda makes me think of how I liked Kings of Leon back when I saw them playing at Iowa’s student union in 2007. And NOW LOOK AT THEM.

Happy Veterans Day. May you find yourself swiping right and then cuddling with a man (or woman!) in uniform on the Metro today.
