w is for whitney

gertrude

So, remember when I mentioned that I was about to closet raid everything on Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney? Well, wouldn’t you know, she is an artist HERSELF. I’m about to shell out for the Whitney to see just this piece. Sorry, Wesselmann and Warhol, I’m beelining for straight for Gertrude sculpture…and then her closet. A promise is a promise.

Sometimes art is grocery shopping (though, let’s be real, it’s mostly a hassle). Luckily for you, Andy Warhol, I too am always under-utilizing my shopping cart while wearing sunglasses! It’s like we’re twins.

So, Tom Wesselmann‘s retrospective opened last week at the Denver Art Museum.  Wesselmann’s considered a part of the Pop Art movement, but when collectors talked to him about Lichtenstein’s work in the 60s, he saw no similarities (insert loud laugh-crying emoji here…)

I mean, SURE, Tom, I appreciate your use of everyday objects as a part of the composition > critique on consumerism, but sheesh…you see no overlapping qualities?!

Still Life with Portrait from 'Six Still Lifes' 1974 by Roy Lichtenstein 1923-1997

From top: Wesselmann, Warhol’s soup can, Lichtenstein’s still life.

Never mind, Wesselmann, you’re right. Totally separate thing going on…

mary cassatt at the louvre

cassatt louvre

This work is currently on display at the Degas / Cassatt exhibition at the National Gallery (I’m giving it one of those “Must Go!” Fandango ratings).

He studied the heck out of Cassatt’s pose for a variety of prints and sketches.  Degas made 20 known versions, the second largest number of studies by the artist for a work.

Degas wrote, “Her slender…figure, neatly tailored, and her crisply furled umbrella all convey to us something of Mary Cassatt’s tense, energetic character.” In other words, 19th-century ice queen. Love it, Mary!

Henry P. McIlhenny owned and donated the sketch to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Andy Warhol once said McIlhenny was “the only person in Philadelphia with glamour.”

lost and found: andy warhol

The Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Mellon University and the Carnegie Museum of Art are giving themselves some MAJOR high fives this month for finding lost works of art by Warhol on a floppy disk.

All this time, I figured the only masterpiece on such a device was Carmen San Diego and that incredibly entertaining Treasure Mountain game (hello, you caught ELVES FOR MONEY). Don’t even get me started on what I made on that KID PIX program.

It’s circling the art world this week Andy Warhol’s work, “White Marilyn,” sold for $41 million. His other work, “Race Riots,” went for nearly $63 million. I get excited when I find deals at consignment shops. This is like the OPPOSITE.

Other artists auctioned that night included Francis Bacon, Mark Rothko, and Alexander Calder. The Christie’s sale saw the auction house’s highest total for a night. Insert money stack emojis here.

“I’m a work of art, I’m a Warhol already.”

Today’s post is brought to you by the number 3: the number of times Jay Z’s dropped Warhol in his verses. Are there more? Possibly. I’m trying to lounge similarly on my couch, so I’m too busy to search his discography right now.
